 Peru

Peru Hello, thanks for visitng. I'm planning a trek to Peru (Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu) in June of 2007. This page chronicles my trip. Hope you find the information here useful. You can check out my travel photos on flickr.

Flight

All flights from the United States will arrive in Lima (LIM) - Peru's capital and largest city. From Los Angeles (LAX) it's about an 9 hour direct flight on Lan Peru. I got my tickets for $950, roundtrip. Saw a couple of deals for mid $700, but they involve two connections, which I don't really mind, except the layovers were too short to risk missing the next flight.

This is during peak season. During the off-season, you can easily get direct flights to Lima from Los Angeles for $700.

To getto Cuzco (and then Machu Picchu) you'll need to buy another flight. From what I've gathered, ground transportation from Lima to Cuzco is just not worth it. It's a quick, one hour flight. I bought the tickets through Taca for $110, much cheaper than Lan.

Vaccination and Health

Before visiting Peru make sure to get your vaccination shots. Exactly which vaccination shots you need will depend on what areas you'll be traveling to. If you travel to the more remote areas you'll probably need more vaccination than if you stick to the "gringo" route, i.e., Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu.

According to the folks at the San Francisco Travel and Vaccination Clinic I needed Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Typhoid. I did not need Yellow Fever or Malaria because I wasn't going anything where remote/into the jungles.

Here are some documents on Peru vaccination requirements I scanned in (click for larger versions). They are current as of February 2007.

You may also want to read these documents on altitude sickness if you've never been to high altitude.
